In all lines of work, there are those who go through the motions and those who take the time to do their job right. No job is too small, no assignment too menial to the individual who takes pride in their work. And it is this attention to detail, the commitment to excellence that we should always make a point of recognizing. Call it “Old World” approach to craftsmanship… because that is precisely what it is… and not enough people possess this quality. When you notice that little extra personal touch that has been put into a job, it often stands out like brown shoes with a tux, or a diamond in the rough.
As a manager, one must always take notice of excellence… recognize it and appreciate it at all times… It’s a rare commodity. Make a mental note when you notice something extraordinary, whether it is a presentation, a sales report, a particularly effective speaker, or someone in the hospitality industry. Review it in your mind and think about what it was that separates that effort from the rest of the pack. The, we need to stay on the lookout for similar “flashes of brilliance.” After you have experienced one, you’ll be craving for more. Then, we can all get better by incorporating the qualities of this excellence in our own daily performance. Before long, you’ll make the pleasant discovery that you too have become a craftsman in your field… and that is a great label to have.
