Remember the words of Peter Pan as he sang to us? “I don’t want to grow up.” Hey, Pete… who does? Growing up means responsibilities, accountabilities, and liabilities. It can be pretty scary. But you know what? I have some good news for you. Growth is a lifelong process that we need to learn to embrace, because it is never over. We don’t simply change our attitude, apply some behavioral techniques and find ourselves looking and acting like a grown up. Instead, it is a complex process of evolution over time of internalizing and reacting to the endless stream of stimuli of which we get bombarded each day.
Growth and discovery are an amazingly exciting tandem along the way. There is no single prescription for happiness, nor is there a single voice with a message to tell their patented secret of success. We reach our goals in life more effectively by using our peripheral vision and by listening to a collection of motivational spin doctors (myself included). You’ll discover very soon that we don’t want to grow up either!
I know, the bills still have to be paid every month and life’s challenges never completely let up, but we should never completely let go of the joys of childhood.
